This game tries to sell you with a very particular line: “Wanna play a PlayStation-era-style Survival Horror game? Just like mom used to make?” Outside of some visual effects, that isn’t true. The play and presentation of Back in 1995 is far more primitive than even the earliest efforts on PSX.
The setup is familiar… you begin the game in the middle of a city-wide catastrophe, working with survivors who are hostile and offer no explanation of why mutant spirits are wandering the streets and halls. There’s a definite turn in this that makes Back in 1995 a survival horror game that’s ABOUT survival horror games. But I don’t think it works.
