The remit of this project is fairly narrow… Kole plays and talks about survival horror games, or games that are horror-themed which fit somewhere into the tradition of survival horror. The act of picking a game like Spec-Ops is a fun bit of transgressive persuasion. Yes, it pulls a “Heart of Darkness” twist on you, and it incorporates perception-testing hallucinations… but is it survival horror?
I played the game on the stream with the goal of getting an answer to that question. I’d give it a firm “yes”. Though it’s trapped in a C+ third person shooter framework, there is a story of complete degradation and dread that is very much front-and-center.
